The yellow-bellied sapsucker is a woodpecker native to North America, with a habitat that ranges across Canada, eastern Alaska and the northeastern United States (there is also a small population found in high elevations of Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina). Although Edwards depicted and described several woodpeckers in his four-volume publication, A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, this particular example has yet to be identified in his published works. Catesby included a different pose of the yellow-bellied sapsucker as plate 21in volume one of his The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands (London, 1731-1743).
