The Carolina parrot or parakeet is a now-extinct bird that was originally found from the Ohio Valley to the Gulf of Mexico, and lived in old forests along rivers. Edward's drawing was likely copied from Mark Catesby's original depiction made in the 1720s while in America and later published as plate 11 in volume one of his The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands (London, 1731-1743). This piece bears the ink inscription 9 in the upper left corner.
