- The Estate
The indigo bunting is a small bird native in both North America and northern South America. The male is vibrant blue during the summer breeding season, although it turns a brown color during the winter months. Edward's drawing was likely inspired by Mark Catesby's original depiction made in the 1720s while in America and later published as plate 45 (where it is identified as the Blew Linnet) of volume one of his The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands (London, 1731- 1743). Edwards illustrated the indigo bunting accompanied by a small moth in the upper right field.
