In his diaries, Charles Drayton recorded nighttime activity at Drayton Hall and on other plantations. Enslaved people traveled from plantation to plantation to complete their work. Resistance attempts by enslaved individuals often occurred under the cover of darkness. Conflicts between plantation overseers and enslaved laborers or Charles himself came to a head. Curator Amber Satterthwaite shares how life and work continued long after the sun went down.
