George Edwards Ivory-billed Woodpecker

$325.00
QTY

The ivory-billed woodpecker is the second largest woodpecker in the world and the largest in the United States; prior to being considered extinct in the late twentieth century, the woodpeckers habitat was located in the southern United States, which was covered by vast tracts of hardwood forests, the woodpeckers preferred habitat. Recent reports of ivory-billed woodpeckers located in Arkansas and Florida surfaced in the early twenty-first century, but remain inconclusive. This rendering depicts the male of the species, which is distinguished by its distinctive red crest. Edwards' drawing was likely copied from Mark Catesby's original depiction made in the 1720s and later published as the Largest White Billed Woodpecker as plate 16 in volume one of his The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands (London, 1731-1743). This piece is inscribed in the upper left corner.
