Liberty & Slavery

Liberty & Slavery is a documentary that examines the paradox of America's founding fathers who were champions of freedom, both slaveholders and non-slaveholders, who were willing to uphold and protect an institution that enslaved a majority of the population in the south. To explore this paradox, director A. Troy Thomas visits historic sites and plantations such as Mount Vernon, Monticello, and Drayton Hall and invites respected scholars and historians like Lonnie Bunch (Founding Director of of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History), Drayton Hall's own Director Emeritus George McDaniel, and current Drayton Hall President & CEO Carter C. Hudgins, to discuss how Jefferson's most powerful words "all men are created equal" did not apply to so many Americans.
